Hola from Colombia

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

Greetings from Colombia!  I know there has been a long lapse in entries, mainly due to spotty internet connections and trying to make the most of our time abroad to see sites instead of using the computer.  We’ll be back in the states next week, and there will be a big push to catch up on all the stories we want to share:  more about Cuzco, Peru, the Manu jungle trip, and our time here in Colombia – from cities to the country, skyscrapers to coffee plantations, to a beach only accessible by a 2-hr walk through the jungle – we’ve got loads to tell you about.

I’ve been writing drafts about Colombia on bus and plane rides, and I’ve had to rewrite the entries several times.  This country keeps changing my mind.  It’s incredibly diverse, with mountains, jungle, and tropical coasts; high desolate landscapes with glaciers at over 5,000 meters, and rushing rivers cutting through green valleys.  The people are diverse, too, more so than the other countries we’ve visited: Spanish and other Europeans, natives, Africans and mixes of all of the above.   It’s not an easy place to summarize.

Here’s a sneak peak at what’s to come and where we’ve been – this is from yesterday, on a beach at Tayrona National Park, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast.  Beautiful, remote, and HOT!  Thank goodness for that water – the only way to tolerate the heat.

More coming soon!

Ahh, Tayrona! My favorite beach in the world. Glad you’re having a good time!
