Photo of the day: Michigan Spirit

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Last year we spent the Fourth of July holiday visiting my grandfather & other relatives in Michigan.  Western Michigan, along Lake Michigan, is to me perfect Americana summer: pristine beaches, beautiful blue water, charming red lighthouses, bike paths that lead to ice cream stands, and neighborhoods like this one gearing up for a 4th of July block party.

On the evening of the 4th, we went to view the fireworks at a local farm, where the owner has started doing his own private fireworks display.  It was totally amazing and totally free, including a potluck dinner & sodas & desserts.  Everyone just parked on a part of his lawn, set up chairs and blankets, and settled in for the awesome 35-min display. I’ve never been so close to where the fireworks were set off, and it was thrilling to watch the guys run over, light them, run back, and try to time it all just right.  It was truly one of the best displays I’ve ever seen.  The only person who wasn’t crazy about it was 10-year-old Sally, who declared them “too loud!”
