Photo of the day: Guards of Jerusalem

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Jerusalem is hands down among the most fascinating places in the world. The religious energy in the city is palpable.  The sites are the most ancient of ancient. And the delicate, delicate balance among the Jews, Christians and Muslims feels like a high tension wire on the verge of snapping at any moment.

Holding this all together are members of the Israel Defense Forces.  High school graduates, male and female, are required to serve in the army (3 years for men, 2-3 years for women). The sight of a teenage girl with a pink iPhone, Gucci purse and an Uzi – a not uncommon combination in Israel – was certainly memorable.

These guards are watching over the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of the holiest sites for many Christian sects.
