Photo of the day: Tulip Time

Thursday, July 19, 2012

Okay, so it’s not tulip season. But something made me think of the Keukenhof Gardens and I dug up this picture of tulip fields next to the gardens.  The crazy thing is that since they are harvesting the bulbs, the flowers all get chopped off after they bloom and discarded.

For a fascinating view on the control tulips have over our lives – and how this seemingly simple plant caused a catastrophic economic crash in the Netherlands – check out The Botany of Desire.

I love that photo! It reminds me of watermelon. And tulips, of course.
    Great shot!
