Photo of the day: Cape winelands

South Africa’s wine country is ridiculously beautiful, accessible, and affordable.  We stumbled into the wine country the weekend of a festival, paid $20 for a glass that got us free wine at over 40 wineries, and spent the next 3 days in a haze around the Stellenbosch wine region.  Is the wine as good as Napa/Sonoma?  No. Is the scenery more stunning? Yes. Is the value unbelievable?  Heck yes.  We kept joking to each other, “Africa. This is Africa.” because lying on a giant pillow in the middle of a winery after drinking 3 glasses of wine, no, you wouldn’t think you were in “Africa,” at least, not the Africa of American dreams.

Stellenbosch also turned out to be an excellent college town with a great hostel and a fantastic Lebanese restaurant.  Nothing about it was at all “African.”  But it was a great entrée to the country.  I’m glad we went, and I’m also so glad our South African trip didn’t end in that region. The rest of the country has so much more to offer.
